Doner Kabab: 'Doner' Where to get a good 'Kabab' in Kochi? Try This!

Doner Kabab Review

One of the most elaborately designed, eye catching stalls in the LuLu Food Court has to be the one that belongs to Doner Kabab, right between SFC Plus and Kobe Sizzlers. A good looking stall is not the only thing they have: they serve up all kinds of Turkish dishes, and the sheer variety is quite impressive. They have chicken, mutton and even beef to choose from, like any authentic Turkish cuisine eatery should. We highly recommend going to their stall and taking a look at the dishes they keep on display at the counter, it will give you a good idea of what you could expect to get.
While Turkish cuisine does borrow some elements of Arabic cuisine and some menu items are similar to those found at Arabian Treat etc, the variety and taste of food on offer here surely demands a write up.

Chicken Mixed Grill

This is the one to go for if you want to get a good idea of what this place has to offer. In the half plate one, you will get two skewers each of chicken tikka and kabab, 3 wings, 2 grilled patties, salad and halves of two different breads. The full plate additionally has a grilled chicken piece and full pieces of the two breads etc.

Chicken Tikka

The tikka is well spiced and perfectly cooked, moist and juicy but at the same time it dissolves in your mouth. If cooked any longer, it would have become dry and if under cooked, it would have been chewy but they strike the balance perfectly. If ordered individually, comes with bread, French fries and salad.

Chicken Kabab

Minced chicken marinated with spices and with chilly seeds in it. Again, very well cooked and tastes great. If ordered individually, comes with bread, French fries and salad.

Chicken Grilled Patty

Minced chicken and spices made into the shape of a patty. While not crisp and juicy like a burger patty, it tastes great with all the spices that go into it and will go well with the breads they have on offer. If ordered individually, comes with bread and salad.

Chicken Wings

Tender, juicy wings marinated with spices. The spices used to season this is not the same as you would find in the tikka, evident since it is red in colour. Hence, it tastes different too. There is a reasonable amount of meat on them and the skin fat is completely burned off.

Chicken Fatayar

This is one of the items kept on display at their counter, and is sure worth trying. It is half-moon shaped just like a Calzone [folded over pizza], only a Turkish one and is actually somewhat more like a meat pie. Inside, you will find small chunks of marinated chicken, onion, tomato and various spices. They serve it cut into sections.

Chicken Oval Bread

If chicken Fatayar is the Turkish analogue to the calzone, the Chicken Oval Bread as it is called here is the analogue to the burger. It looks exactly like one, with the bun-like brown crust on top and even the sesame seeds. This is cut in half and the filling is in between the two halves, just like a burger. What is different though, is that the bread is a bit thinner and crunchier. The bread used, I read up, is a ‘Tombik Pide’ or fatty pita bread, hence the likeness to a bun rather than the thin pita bread we are accustomed to. The chicken in between is also in the form of small marinated chunks, not like a patty. Accompanying the chicken are potato fries, finely chopped violet cabbage, lettuce all topped with a tangy, lightly spiced sauce.

This place offers some delightful Middle-Eastern food and is well recommended. Moreover, it can be rather healthy, depending on what you choose to order, which is an added bonus.

What we liked/Recommended for: All dishes tried so far tasted really good. Decent variety on offer. Most dishes come with veggies and extras. Probably healthier than other fried food places.

An 'Arabian Treat' to Behold!

Arabian Treat Review

Oberon Mall’s food court did try to cover some of the major cuisines most of us were familiar with. The Arabic food joint 'Arabian Treat' was one of them. Fast food joints all around Kochi do serve Shawarma and grilled chicken like Al Faham (however you want to spell it in English!) but this place has a lot more variety on offer.

Arabian Mixed grill

This is your best bet to get an idea of what everything here tastes like. This includes kababs, tikkas and charcoal chicken for meats. Though it comes with chicken and mutton as standard, you can opt for all chicken or alternate mixes too. Included in the price are kuboos, garlic paste and a simple but great salad. The tomatoes, cucumber and everything else in the salad have always been fresh and juicy. Available as special, full and half.

Seafood Mixed Grill

Available in full or half, this came with a thick charcoal fish fillet and prawns. The prawns come with the shell mostly intact but tasted great: juicy and cooked to perfection. The fish tikkas use seabass, a fish that does not have any fishy taste whatsoever. Even fish haters like me fell in love with its melt in the mouth texture. On the other hand, if you want a fishy tasting tikka, this may not be what you are looking for.

Charcoal Chicken

For those who appreciate a mild grilled taste, this is a slightly healthy choice since minimal oil is used. The meat is tender with a mildly spicy flavour. There is a boneless version which still has two small bones at the ends, we were told that this was for enhancing the aesthetic value. This too, is served with kuboos and garlic paste. Available in full or half.

Spicy Chicken/Mutton Kabab

Finely minced chicken marinated in spices and cooked on a skewer. Tender, tasty with a hint of spice. Served with kuboos and garlic paste.

Spicy Chicken tikka

These are bite sized chicken pieces with bone. Nice and juicy with just the right amount of spice. Served with kuboos and garlic paste.

Sheesh Tawook

Essentially a tikka without the bone but retaining the goodness of spices. Makes for easy eating! Served with kuboos and garlic paste.
